Oh how far I have come. I remember taking some of my very first blog shots. But first let’s back up even further than that. I remember being obsessed with Tumblr and how cool some of the photos were. SO inspiring, and my basically a mood board for what I wanted my life to be like. They were fun and sassy and cute. From there I moved on to find blogs. I remember one of the first blogs that I came upon was Cat Eyes and Skinny Jeans. She posted (and still does) pictures mostly of her nails, and single pictures, some without captions, and fashion images. I thought it was the coolest thing! Just whatever came to her mind and the possibilities were endless.
I really started my blog my freshman year of college. My roommate had a DSLR so I asked her to take pictures of me since she loved photography. I had two outfits, a red coat with black leggings, my Tory Burch knee highs and a plaid scarf. The second was a grey quilted skirt with a navy three-quarter sleeve, another scarf and knee highs because it was winter. She took pictures of our friend group that day as well outside of our dorm and that is when I began. I do not remember uploading content or any of that, all I remember is taking pictures and writing about the places we went, like the trail of lights and cute posts about my family.
I started slowly integrating my content into Instagram but I struggled between wanting to blog and wanting to keep it personal. For this reason, I think it took me much longer to grow. I also did not have a specific aesthetic or niche. All of that fell into place after attending blogging conferences. I went to BlogHer ’16 (wow that seems so long ago now that I wrote that) and while I focused on the words, I was mainly just networking and figuring out what these people did, and that they got lots of free stuff!
The one that really turned it all around for me was a two-day blogging workshop I attended in Austin. That taught me all about what I had to do to be successful. While I am still far from successful with my blog, my Instagram is growing and I attribute that need for information from that workshop.
Lastly, my major in college really helped me out as well. Taking social media classes and having an internship and a job specifically in social media were so helpful! I sometimes get embarrassed to say that I started so long ago but I did not grow until recently. It was all a learning process though and mostly me learning about what I wanted to do and where I wanted to take my blog. I remember thinking so hard of my blog name (which I am not so keen on now) but that it was a big deal to make it girly, and two things that go together since so many blogs were named things like Pearls and Louboutins or Gems and Lace.
I loved how it all ended up and looking back at all of the pictures I can remember exactly where I was and what time in my life I was at. This has been such a blessing and I hope to keep growing more and more.
