Coffee Talk : Internships

Today’s coffee talk is going to be about some internship advice! I have only had two internships so far but I accepted a job offer after my second one. I wanted to share some things I learned and some helpful tips and tricks I have acquired along the way.

If I am being completely honest, I still have so much to learn. I struggle every day keeping up with a topic that I do not know much about. (I work at an agency that specializes in art). one piece of advice that is different from the advice below is that if you want it you have to prove it. And even if you prove it, it still may not be enough. But if you work your butt off and try hard enough and put in the extra work you will succeed. It has been hard for me not to give up. Jobs are not like college. There are no “sick” days your first few months where you can just skip and watch Netflix. You have to be on your A-game until you prove yourself and that’s only half the work. You can celebrate for a second when you get something right, but then you gotta keep going to the next goal.

I feel like I am constantly proving myself in this job, and honestly, I am not sure if that is how it is everywhere so that I cannot give advice on. However, what I can say is choose a field that you will be willing to be up for the challenge. If you want a high power career you will be forever proving yourself, but regardless of the job you choose, there will be ups and downs. So choose wisely. Okay enough with the rant, on to the advice that I can give!

1. Put in the time and effort : I believe one thing that helped me get the job was that I went in every day even though I was only required to go in three days a week! I didn’t end up getting another job besides my part-time internship so I went in extra days and I learned more about what it was like to really be apart of the company.
2. Ask questions : I always asked a lot of questions at the beginning so later I knew what I was doing on my own, plus people are willing to be more lenient when you’re just learning instead of later on when you should know how to do things on your own.
3. Try your hardest : Do your best and try to learn about what they are doing even for tasks that aren’t yours. It shows you are genuinely interested.
4. Ask what you can do to improve : Every few weeks I like to ask what I can improve on and work on it! My job has to do with artists so now I try to listen to art podcasts every day before work to learn art jargon.
5. Write everything down : This is my mom’s tip, it helps you remember later what you worked on and learned so you can mention these things at future job interviews. It also helps when you are altering your resume.
